This paper represents a preliminary study of the growth of the WWW and of a new application of cocitation analysis to map its contents. I am currently working with the Inktomi group at Berkeley to extend this preliminary study to a much larger scale analysis of the intellectual stucture of the WWW. There are many problems involved in scaling the method used in cocitation analysis to deal with millions of documents and tens of millions of citations. However this does seem to be a very fruitful area for future research.
